1.人们很容易低估了英国小说家詹姆斯·赫里欧。他的作品有一种令人愉快、易读的风格，大概就让人以为任何人都能模仿他。我总是听人说：我也可以写书，就是我没有时间。这话说得轻松，做得到可不容易。与大众的观点相反，詹姆斯·赫里欧在他早期，用他的话说，“在写作游戏中尝试”并不容易。他显然极具天赋，但他留给世人的最终的、精雕细琢的作品却是多年练习、重写和阅读的结果。和大多数作家一样，他在写作过程中也遭受了许多失望和拒绝，但这些都使他更加坚定了成功的决心。他一生中所取得的一切成就都是来之不易的，他在文学领域的成功也不例外。
【译文】It is easy to underestimate English writer James Herriot. He had such a pleasant, readable style that are might think that anyone could imitate it. How many times have I heard people say, “I could write a book, I just haven’t the time” Easily said. Not so easily done. James Herriot, contrary to popular opinion did not find it easy in his early days of, as he put it, “having a go at the writing game”. While he obviously had an abundance of natural talent, the final polished work that he have to the world was the result of years of practicing, re-writing and reading. Like the majority of authors, he had to suffer many disappointments and rejections along the way, but these made him all the more determined to succeed. Everything he achieved in life was earned the hard way and his success in the literacy field was no exception.
2.到莎士比亚出生的年代，欧洲经历了宗教戏剧的消亡，以及在古典悲剧和喜剧的影响下新的戏剧形式的产生。
【译文】By the date of his birth Europe was witnessing the passing of the religious drama, and the creation of new forms under the incentive of classical tragedy and comedy.
3.但是专业性的戏剧公司在其常驻剧院繁荣起来，怀有文学抱负的大学生迅速投身这些剧院，将其作为维持生计的一种方式。
【译文】But the professional companies prospered in their permanent theaters, and university men with literary ambitions were quick to turn to these theaters as offering a means of livelihood.
4.每个进入文法学校学习的少年都知道戏剧是一种文学形式，这种文学形式赋予希腊和罗马以荣耀，并且可能给英国带来荣耀。
【译文】No boy who went to a grammar school could be ignorant that the drama was a form of literature which gave glory to Greece and Rome and might yet bring honor to England

【译文】A native literary drama had been created, its alliance with the public playhouses established, and at least some of its great traditions had been begun.
